Tom Cotter

Being a stand-up comedian is one thing, but being a stand-up comedian on a nationally televised reality competition show is an entirely different level of stand-up-ness (cause we just made that a thing). Tom Cotter jumped into the spotlight as the runner up during the 2012 season of America’s Got Talent and has seen an instant increase in national bookings that have changed his life as a professional comic.

Steve Byrne, Gregory Popovich-LVBST w/Comedian Michele LaFong

Jan. 24, 2013-6pm-7pm PST 1230AM in LV & The Web

Steve Byrne, star of the new hit TBS half hour comedy sitcom Sullivan & Son, guests on Las Vegas Backstage Talk Radio Show with Comedian Michele LaFong on 1230 AM in Las Vegas and The Web.

In the three segment interview with Host, Comedian Michele LaFong, Steve spoke about his fifteen year stand-up career, and long-time firendships with three of the cast members that he brought onto TBS’ new hit series including Actor Vince Vaughn.

Described by many as the new “Cheers,” The show is based on Steve Sullivan (played by Byrne) leaving behind his life in New York as a successful corporate attorney to take over the family bar in a working-class Pittsburgh neighborhood. The first ten episodes averaged over 2.5 million viewers and new episodes will appear on TBS in 2013.

Steve’s standup has been featured on several shows including NBC’s The Tonight Show, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, and TBS’s Conan. He has also appeared in the hit comedies The Dilemma, Couples Retreat, and Four Christmases. His most recent hour special, The Byrne Identity, premiered last year on Comedy Central to rave reviews.

A true international comedian, Byrne has performed to sold-out crowds around the world. He has been a featured comic at the Just For Laughs Festival (in Montreal, Toronto and Chicago), and he has been a part of several national comedy tours including Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Tour, The Kims Of Comedy, and most recently The Sullivan & Son Comedy Tour. As a big supporter of the US troops, Steve has headlined several USO tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan and Guam.

Steve’s lack of ego and outstanding work ethic has helped him become one of today’s most respected comedians.

Jan. 4, 2011: Demond Wilson, (Sanford & Son) and Murray Sawchuck, (America’s Got Talent) tonight, on Las Vegas Backstage Now!

Tonight, at 8PM Pacific Time, on Las Vegas Backstage Now, our radio show hosted by RichardSpasoff and myself on KLAV 1230 AM, and on the Internet nationally, we will have Demond Wilson, from Sanford & Son, and Murray Sawchuck, (America’s Got Talent) as our guests. It should prove to be a really interesting show!

Last night, I popped in at Bootlegger’s, (a popular Las Vegas “show-biz hangout.”) Monday is open mike night. Apparently, I walked in just as Rich Little began performing his set. He was trying out some new material that went over very well with the crowd of “regulars” having dinner, and waiting for their stage time.

Next up, was Steve Rossi from “Allen & Rossi,” back in “The Ed SullivanShow days. The last time I worked with both Steve Rossi and Rich Little, was in 1994, when we were taping a TV show out of The Debbie Reynold’s Hotel & Casino, on The Las Vegas Strip, where I had my own show, “Vegas Live,” four nights a week. The TV show was not mine. I had nothing to do with it. Nor did I book the acts on the show. However, the show was named “Las Vegas Live,” which did not make me happy, especially since my crowd thought that this was my show they were coming out to see. To add insult to injury, I wasn’t even a booked act on the show! (Welcome to Show Biz!)

When I explained to Debbie Reynolds that a lot of people came out to see me that night due to the name confusion.  Debbie agreed that I should at least be on the show.  The producer of the show told me begrudgingly: “you’re on next,” which was the third spot of the night. It was great fun. I got a standing ovation after performing a seven-minute set consisting of stand-up comedy, and impressions. The producer then put on Impressionist, Rich Little. I don’t think that Rich was too happy having to perform his set right after I did all of those impressions.

That’s Show Biz! I wonder if Rich remembers me. If not, I won’t be the one to remind him! LOL

Nov. 7, 2010: Jeff Dunham & The Business of Ventriloquism

by Michele LaFong

Everyone’s been calling me.  “Did you see Jeff Dunham on the Joy Behar Show on HLN last week?”  The answer is “yes” and I thought he did a good job. I know how difficult it is to perform an interview while creating two personalities. A lot of the regular guests don’t even have one, but that doesn’t stop their lips from moving anyway. A lot of my friends and fans were surprised that Jeff Dunham’s throat was moving so much.  They told me that they never noticed that with me.

Well, that’s the advantage to being a female ventriloquist.  We don’t have an Adam’s apple…well most of us don’t anyway. Ventriloquism is powered by the diaphragm, just like it is for singers. When I’m “throwing my voice” I do whatever I have to do to “pull it off”.  I use my diaphragm, my IUD, my PMS, whatever I can muster at the time. It ain’t easy.  I give him credit.

Meanwhile, I couldn’t believe that Joy Behar had asked Jeff if he thought that the art of ventriloquism was a dying art? This was right after she had announced that Jeff Dunham made over 22 million dollars last year and was the #1 top selling comic. I wonder if Joy Behar is aware of Terry Fator at The Mirage having a hundred million dollar contract after he won a million dollars as a ventriloquist on America’s Got Talent?

Thanks to those who have paved the way, I’m much more in demand lately too.

I have a private party at Pierro’s in LV tomorrow. I’m hosting The Global Gaming Expo Nov.16 at The LV
Convention Center from 12-4pm and several new doors have opened to me including books, radio and televison.

Please don’t forget to catch me Tuesday Nov.9 on KLAV am 1230 at 8pm-8:20 for interview on The Psychic Medium Spasoff Show.
